Denise's City Cottage Part 5 - Using Pastels to Paint the Interior

The hardest part of the house....is the finish work.  For most people this is probably the fun part, the part when the house truly begins to have some character....well I am not most people.  Deciding on the finish work is a NIGHTMARE!!! No, literally, I have nightmares over finish work.  It took me two months to decide to tackle it.  So here goes....after a lot of searching I decided to try my hand at using pastels to color the walls.

Good thing my mom had saved this pack of pastels from who knows how long ago.

I am a complete novice at this, so if you are reading this post and you have experience.....well feel free to provide some pointers in the comments below.  I am trying to recreate a slightly yellowed interior finish. I live in Southern California and I am trying for a stucco/adobe type look.  I took a light yellow chalk and lightly rubbed it all over the walls.

This is going to leave little patches of yellow all over the raised part of the stucco.

After I applied the yellow I then took a paint brush and lightly brushed it over the entire wall to smooth the yellow out.

I then took a piece of brown chalk and I rubbed it on the wall where I would expect dirt to collect.  So under the window opening, along the floor edge, along the ceiling and in the corners.

Same technique with the paint brush...smooth out the brown.  Here is a picture of the final wall.

Make sure that you don't over do the color, the interior should be lighter so that it doesn't look dark and dank.  Unless of course you are going for that look.

At first I wasn't excited about how it turned out but after a couple of days I went back and I am really liking the look.  I will finish the interior later with a matte sealer but for now I am not going to seal it so that I can add more to it if needed once it is assembled.

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial on chalk painting....remember it was my first time!
